The Department of Urban Education at the University of Houston-Downtown seeks to hire a Professor of Special Education at the rank of Assistant Professor in a Tenure Track position. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and/or graduate-level coursework, supervise clinical teachers, conduct research and publish scholarly work, and provide leadership to the special education program.
Job Description
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Content expert in Special Education.
- Teach special education content to special education and general education students in inclusive K-12 classrooms.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in special education with potential emphasis in literacy-related subjects, such as reading and reading instruction, across multiple formats, including face-to-face, hybrid, and online.
- Supervise clinical teachers in a variety of instructional environments.
- Maintain an active research agenda that includes publishing, presenting at local, state, and national conferences, and writing grants.
- Serve on committees at the department, college, and university levels.
- Lead and support efforts related to accreditation, program evaluations, and securing grant funding.
- Build collegial solid relationships and actively recruit for departmental programs.
- Willingness to teach at UHD satellite campuses (UHD-LSC University Park, UHD-LSC Kingwood).
Special consideration will be given to candidates with the following additional qualifications in one or more areas:
- Additional experience in Bilingual Education (Spanish).
- Teaching experience in urban schools.
- Teaching experience at the college level in teacher preparation programs with an emphasis in special education and/or related fields such as school psychology, K-12 educational leadership, or bilingual education.
- Experience as a clinical field supervisor or site coordinator or mentor for student teachers.
- An established record in securing external funding.
- Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) Credentials
- Experience in Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS), Strategic Instruction Model (SIM), and High-Leverage Practices (HLP).
Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree (PhD or EdD) in special education or a closely related field. ABD conferral date must be no later than May 31, 2025.
- Experience teaching special education in public schools (3 years minimum).
- Valid K-12 teaching license preferred.
- A record of or potential for professional research, especially research impacting the K-12 setting in special education and/or other related fields.
