The Department of Arts and Communication at the University of Houston-Downtown seeks a tenure-track candidate in Studio Art, rank commensurate with experience. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in painting and printmaking. Experience teaching in painting, drawing, printmaking, and/or watercolor preferred.

The Department of Arts and Communication Studies offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in Fine Arts and Communication Studies. These programs together apply both theory and critical thought to the production and analysis of visual design, oral communication, or written text. Both programs have robust internship programs that help prepare students for careers after graduation. As part of the department, the O'Kane Gallery presents five to six exhibitions, including professional and student shows, that meet the diverse interests of students, faculty, and staff of the University of Houston-Downtown. Exhibitions in all media provide educational support to various university courses and to nearby schools. The gallery also functions as a site for university forums, meetings, and receptions.

The University of Houston-Downtown is a Texas state public university and is a dynamic campus located in downtown Houston, minutes away from a thriving fine arts district. The city is home to a large visual arts community, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Menil Collection, and the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston. With dedicated faculty, small classes, and innovative course options, UHD offers excellent educational opportunities in a wide variety of degree programs at the bachelor’s and master’s levels. UHD is recognized as a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and a Minority-Serving Institution (MSI), and is a teaching-intensive university. This vacancy is in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, which houses five community-facing Centers available for collaborative opportunities. College faculty have created a collegial community of cooperation and collaboration, pursuing opportunities to work across disciplines as evidenced by the burgeoning BA in Fine Arts and MA in Non-Profit Management.

Job Description

Teaching load is 3/3 in the first year, 4/3 after that, including equivalent studio courses and Introduction to Visual Art. Areas of specialization may include the following: painting, watercolor, drawing, and/or printmaking. The awarding of tenure requires an established record of service to the department, the university, and the profession, as specified in the candidate’s contract and according to the department criteria document guidelines. Continued evidence of significant scholarly/creativity development and achievement is expected. Must demonstrate ability to work with students of varied experiences who are non-art majors. Candidate must also have excellent communication skills.

Required Qualifications

  • Candidate must have received an M.F.A. in Studio Art.
