The Department of Urban Education at the University of Houston-Downtown is seeking to hire a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Literacy. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and/or graduate-level coursework, supervise clinical teachers, conduct research and publication, and provide leadership to the literacy program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy-related subjects, such as reading language arts, and reading instruction, across multiple formats, including face-to-face, hybrid, and online.
- Supervise clinical teachers in a variety of instructional environments.
- Maintain an active research agenda in reading, English language arts, children’s literacy, and related topics that include presenting at national conferences, publishing, and writing grants.
- Serve on committees at the department, college, and university levels, such as Rank and Tenure.
- Lead and support efforts related to accreditation, program evaluations, and securing grant funding.
- Build strong collegial relationships and actively recruit for departmental programs.
Qualifications:
- Earned doctorate in literacy or a closely related field. Doctoral degree (PhD or EdD) in literacy or a closely related field. ABD conferral date must be no later than May 31, 2025.
- Minimum 3 years experience in teaching Pre-K through 6 literacy grades / Reading in public schools.
- Strong background teaching in / working with underserved and/or multilingual communities.
- Experience with literacy curriculum design and implementation, including the “science of reading,”, to support reading and writing development and instruction, as well as supporting students with special educational needs and multilingual students.
- Experience building and supporting school-university partnerships, including teaching field-based and/or clinic-based K-6 literacy methods courses.
- Awareness of literacy programs in use in Houston area public schools.
- Ability to engage students with current trends in the field, such as the Science of Teaching Reading, censorship of children’s literature, home literacy practices, technology use in literacy development, reading and writing assessment, etc.
- Current teaching grades k-12 license preferred.
