In cooperation with the Grant Principal Investigators and the Project Coordinators, the Undergraduate Retention Specialist provides undergraduate College of Science and Engineering (CSE) students with the knowledge and the support they need to complete the process of applying for financial aid, enrolling in classes, and becoming familiar with the university environment. This position assists the Project Coordinators with daily grant operations and participates in the implementation of the CSE marketing plan and recruitment events.

Note: Funding for this position comes from a Department of Education grant funded for the 2021-2022 academic year potentially being funded through 2027.

Duties:

  • Works directly with grant and CSE faculty and staff to coordinate, plan and oversee recruitment and outreach events for CSE undergraduate students.
  • Coordinates recruitment efforts with Office of Admissions & CSE staff to ensure a smooth admission process. Follows through until enrolled.
  • Conducts one-on-one meetings with HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution) STEM grant students each semester to proactively monitor degree progress and refer for academic support, if needed.
  • Serves as a point of contact in CSE for HSI STEM grant students and assists with HSI STEM grant activities.
  • Works with HSI STEM grant project directors to ensure student retention and graduation.
  • Performs additional duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree.
  2. Admissions, academic advising or similar experience in a higher education setting.
  3. Understanding of scholarships and financial aid.
  4. Ability to read and interpret reports and data.
  5. Skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, PeopleSoft; EAB/Navigate and in using social media.
  6. Oral and written communication skills including strong listening skills and attention to details.
  7. Ability to have cultural awareness and understanding.
  8. Ability to organize and prioritize work, collaborate with others, teamwork, and planning.
  9. Ability to think critically, problem solve and to be flexible.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in STEM, Education, Counseling, Sociology, or Psychology.
Engagement in professional advising organizations.
Alumni of PPOHA, TRIO and similar programs.
