Description:

The Moores School of Music at the University of Houston seeks candidates for a non-tenure track Professor of Practice in Flute with appointment beginning Fall of 2026. This role is designed for a highly qualified practitioner-scholar with a significant record of professional performance, teaching excellence at the university level, and pedagogical innovation. The successful candidate will contribute to the applied flute studios and academic instruction in at undergraduate and graduate levels. This is a newly created position at the Moores School of Music.


Primary Responsibilities
• Teach Applied Flute to undergraduate and graduate students.
• Lead Practicum courses, including coaching and directing as needed.
• Coach and coordinate Chamber Music as assigned.
• Teach other courses in consultation with the director.
• Mentor doctoral students through independent studies and pedagogy research.
• Contribute to and prioritize interdisciplinary arts education as part of a college-wide
commitment to meaningful artistic connections between disciplines.
• Establish and maintain a national/international profile as a pedagogue, clinician, and
performer, with particular emphasis on leadership in the field of woodwind pedagogy, leading to top-tier national and international publications and presentations.
• Participate in curriculum development and student recruitment.
• Engage in service to the woodwind area, school, university, and profession through committee membership, connections with area EC-12 schools, and/or outreach programs.

Qualifications
Minimum
• Master's degree in Flute or a related field.
• Strong studio and academic teaching record at the university level, demonstrating the ability to support students with a broad range of backgrounds and interests.
• An active professional performance career in solo, concert, or recital settings.
• Strong record of publications, recordings, and scholarly presentations in woodwind pedagogy and performance.
• Demonstrated excellence in interdisciplinary collaboration and public outreach.

Preferred
• Competency with a wide range of musical styles including myriad global traditions, contemporary, early music, commercial, and jazz
• Experience with and enthusiasm for improvisation
• Evidence of an entrepreneurial mindset
• Proven success in graduate-level instruction and mentorship
• Experience with summer music programs, including teaching students at all levels
• Commitment to collaboration, creativity, and collegiality in an active and highly successful school of music.

Salary
Salary and benefits package is competitive and commensurate with credentials. Initial appointment is three (3) years, after which the faculty member is eligible for reappointment.
