Description:

The Department of Health Systems and Population Health Sciences in the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine at the University of Houston invites applications for a faculty position in the field of biostatistics and as a (non-tenure track open rank clinical faculty) Senior Biostatistician within the Humana Integrated Health System Sciences Institute. We are recruiting new faculty that have achieved excellence in education and research and are prepared to contribute to our bold vision (http://www.uh.edu/medicine/).

This faculty is expected to engage in collaborative research within the Department, Institute, College, and University, teach medical students, and, when appropriate, mentor junior faculty and students. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in biostatistics, or a related field, with a track record as an investigator on grants and evidence of interactive, integrative, and cross-disciplinary teaching experience. Candidates are expected to participate in funded research through active collaboration with faculty members at the University of Houston. Ideal candidates should also have interest in primary care, public health, population health, or value-based payment models and have expertise in clinical trials, observational studies, longitudinal studies, diagnostic studies, bioinformatics, surveillance, Bayesian statistics, risk prediction, geospatial analyses, or machine learning.

The faculty will be a critical force for planning, funding, promoting, and executing programs for the Department and Institute. The Institute has a mission to improve the value of healthcare, with a focus on primary care, through research, training, and community engagement. Its research will further treatment models, advance clinical sciences in areas such as primary care, nursing, social work, optometry, and pharmacy, and enhance value through high-value care and value-based payment. Its training will prepare health professions students, faculty, and practitioners to thrive in and shape health systems while its engagement activities will partner with communities in pursuit of well-being.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Primary Responsibilities:

Department responsibilities

  • Supervise and execute relevant aspects of the research process, including question formulation, study design, study implementation, data analysis, and dissemination of results
  • Collaborate with research partners, including the University of Houston’s Colleges, Departments, and Institutes and external organizations
  • Secure extramural funding
  • Develop and teach relevant sessions within the medical school curriculum, including biostatistics, population health, and research design 
  • Develop and implement data management policies
  • Contribute to relevant College of Medicine committees

Student scholarly project supervision

  • Provide support and mentorship to students related to scholarly projects
  • Assist with the recruitment and management of internal and external faculty to participate as mentors.
  • Teach students about research methods and evidence-based medicine
  • Coordinate opportunities for students to disseminate their research findings

Statistical support for faculty research

  • Provide analytic support for stakeholders
  • Conduct analytic consultation meetings with stakeholders
  • When appropriate, clean data and perform analyses
  • Provide guidance regarding the dissemination of products, including manuscripts, posters, and presentations

Humana Institute responsibilities

  • Participate in research, service, and educational activities that contribute to the mission of the Humana Institute 

Collaborate with Humana researchers

Full-Time: 1.0 FTE

Rank and salary commensurate with academic achievements and experience. Consistent with all other appointments within the College of Medicine, this is a non-tenure track position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in biostatistics, or a related field such as epidemiology, data science, or psychology with extensive statistical training or experience 
  • Evidence of scholarly experience and productivity
  • Track record of extramural funding as a principal investigator or co-investigator or evidence of progress towards extramural funding
  • Commitment to innovative approaches to education and learning
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with building partnerships across disciplines in pursuit of educational or research objectives
  • Experience analyzing data from clinical trials
  • Advanced analytic software skills (e.g., SAS, SPSS, Stata, SUDAAN, or R)
  • Experience with cross-disciplinary teaching in an integrated medical curricula
  • Experience using different teaching methods which may include case-based learning, ‘flipped classroom’, problem-based learning, interactive large group presentation, and audience response systems
  • Experience with curricular and instructional design
  • Experience teaching biostatistics for health professions students
  • Experience with administrative responsibilities within an academic environment.
  • Experience with student mentoring and advising
