Department: History Salary: Commensurate with experience

Description:

The Department of History at the University of Houston invites applications for a non-tenure-track Instructional Assistant Professor position in U.S. History with the possibility of renewal. All specializations within U.S. History will be seriously considered. Teaching responsibilities will include both halves of the U.S. history survey, HIST 1301: U.S. History to 1877 and HIST 1302: U.S. History since 1877. The department particularly seeks a candidate with significant experience teaching introductory survey courses in American history; experience with both face-to-face and online teaching is a plus. The typical teaching load is three courses per semester. The teaching responsibilities will primarily consist of large (300 student) U.S. history survey courses but may involve other courses on occasion to meet student needs. Candidates must have completed the Ph.D. by June 2026, and they should have a professional dedication to excellent undergraduate teaching. Contributing to departmental governance and service is also expected.

The University of Houston is a Carnegie Tier-1 research university enrolling over 46,000 students. The UH Department of History, with over 300 majors and 40 M.A. and Ph.D. students, provides high-quality undergraduate and graduate education, delivering both geographic and thematic breadth in research and teaching.

Complete applications should include a letter of application, CV, sample syllabi, a statement of teaching philosophy, and the names and contact information for three references. Applicants are to apply at Prospective Faculty | Office of the Provost | University of Houston by December 1, 2025. Only complete applications will be considered. Please direct inquiries to Dr. Matt Clavin (mjclavin@uh.edu).

Qualifications
Candidates must have the Ph.D. in History, completed by June 2026.

Official transcripts are required for a faculty appointment and will be requested upon selection of the final candidates.

All positions at the University of Houston-System are security sensitive and will require a criminal history check. Individuals conducting research in critical infrastructure areas (i.e., communication infrastructure systems, cybersecurity systems, electric grid, hazardous waste treatment systems, and/or water treatment facilities) are subject to regular review to ensure the security and integrity of the research is maintained.

The University of Houston System and its universities are Equal Opportunity Institutions. Everyone is encouraged to apply.
