Description:

The Department of History, Humanities, and Languages (HHL) is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented student assistant to support Business Administrators and departmental staff with daily operations. This position offers valuable hands-on administrative experience in a professional academic environment.

Primary Responsibilities: 

• Administrative Support: Provide general office assistance to Business Administrators and departmental staff, ensuring efficient day-to-day operations.
• Front Desk Coverage: Serve as the first point of contact by welcoming students, faculty, and visitors; answer and route calls using a multi-line phone system; respond to general inquiries in a courteous and professional manner.
• Document Management: Scan, file, and maintain organized and confidential departmental records in both paper and electronic formats.
• Project & Event Support: Assist with planning and coordinating departmental events, including faculty meetings, workshops, and student recruitment activities.
• Data Entry & Tracking: Accurately input and maintain data in departmental databases and spreadsheets, including student and faculty information.
• Additional Duties: Perform other related tasks as assigned to support departmental needs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Professional demeanor with a positive, customer-service-oriented attitude
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and work effectively under pressure
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to follow instructions and work both independently and as part of a team
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with emphasis on Excel

Minimum Qualifications:
• Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Houston–Downtown (UHD)

• Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 (or higher, as required by university policy)

• Must have received a federal college work- study award

• Availability to work 15–20 hours per week, with a schedule that accommodates office hours
