Description:

The Moores School of Music at the University of Houston seeks a Director of Choral Studies at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. This tenured/tenure-track, full-time, 9-month position begins in the Fall of 2025. This search will be conducted in cooperation with the Houston Symphony, for a potential concurrent appointment as Director of the Houston Symphony Chorus (https://houstonsymphony.org/careers).

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities as Director of Choral Studies in the Moores School of Music will include collaboration with the Director of the Moores School in all aspects of curricular and program design; positioning the Choral Studies program in the national spotlight; recruitment of new students as well as current students pursuing a variety of degrees from across the University of Houston campus; and coordination and leadership in planning and executing Choral Studies activities, rehearsals, concerts, workshops, and other initiatives. The individual appointed to the position will conduct Moores School choirs, train graduate-level conductors, and provide service to the University community and the profession.

Salary:

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. This position will be independently compensated by the University of Houston and the Houston Symphony at market rate. Rank commensurate with experience.

Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will have a proven track record of conducting excellence, outstanding musicianship, effective choral conducting experience at the university level or commensurate professional experience, and demonstrated success with recruiting, retaining, and mentoring undergraduate singers from various backgrounds.
  • Direct experience with professional ensembles, either as a member or a leader, as well as experience working with volunteer singers of all levels, is preferred.
  • We are especially interested in candidates with a record of excellence in choral music and those who have a strong commitment to all aspects in our learning-centered community.
  • A DMA or PhD degree is required. ABD is accepted but would need to be completed prior to start in the Fall 2025.
