Description:
Reporting to and in support of the AVP of Intellectual Property and Industrial Engagement, this position will manage a portfolio of intellectual property (IP) and manage the operations of the Office of Technology Transfer and Innovation (OTTI). Responsible for working with faculty to identify potential inventions, their translation to invention disclosures, and eventually to provisional patent applications. Works with OTTI staff responsible for technology commercialization and licensing to capture value in UH IP. Responsible for managing the operations of the OTTI to ensure efficient work flow and interactions with the UH research and technology enterprise.
1. Cultivates relationships with faculty inventors to define invention disclosures and liaises between faculty and outside legal counsel to construct an effective patenting strategy.
2. Work with faculty to identify attractive UH technologies for licensing to startups or establish companies.
3. Engages with industry partners, startups, and investors to build relationships to understand their needs and develop commercialization strategies for a portfolio of technologies.
4. Manages the day-to-day operations of the OTTI office to ensure an efficient workflow and response with internal and external stakeholders.
5. Supervises and mentors IP and technology transfer staff, evaluates performance and provides formal and informal guidance; sets departmental goals and objectives, including workforce planning and assesses priorities as appropriate in order to achieve objectives.
6. Balances the needs of a complex set of stakeholders including faculty, students, administration, industry partners, entrepreneurs, and investors.
7. Performs other job-related duties as required.
MQ: Education: Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly- job related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Preferred: Law Degree (J.D.) Experience: Requires a minimum of seven (7) years of directly job-related experience. Preferred: Minimum of ten (10) years preferred.
