Description:
The University of Houston Tillman J Fertitta Family College of Medicine (UHCOM) at the University of Houston announces a non-tenure track, Clinical Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences.
Reporting to the Chair of Clinical Sciences, this faculty member will serve as the Clinical Site Liaison for HCA Clear Lake, as well as provide student advising and direct teaching in surgery.
Job Duties
-Provide Surgery instruction and small group facilitation during the LIC academic half day.
-Assist with simulations for CASSEL.
-Provide surgery academic student advising.
-Monitor the learning environment at HCA Clear Lake and respond to concerns:
-Regularly assess quality of learning environment at the clinical site.
-Identify issues or concerns regarding the learning environment and take proactive measures to address them.
-Work with relevant parties to promote a positive learning environment and implement solutions and improvements.
-Coordinate medical student learning experiences at HCA Clear Lake:
-Collaborate with stakeholders at the Com and site to coordinate and place medical students for clinical learning experiences.
-Ensure that medical students receive robust learning experiences aligned with educational objectives.
Assist with recruitment and retention of clinical preceptors:
-Support efforts to recruit new clinical preceptors and retain existing one.
-Cultivate positive relationships with preceptors to enhance the overall educational experience for students.
Ensure timely completion of student assessments:
-Monitor the timely completion of assessments for medical students by preceptors.
-Follow up on outstanding assignments and provide support as needed to ensure completion.
Troubleshoot short-term reassignments:
-Manage short-term reassignments of medical students in cases such as preceptor absences or other unforeseen circumstances.
-Ensure continuity of learning experiences while accommodating necessary changes.
Advocate for student experience(s):
-Serve as an advocate for medical students, ensuring their needs and concerns are addressed effectively.
-Work towards enhancing the overall educational experience for the students.
Liaise with COM leadership:
-Collaborate closely with the Clerkship Director, LIC Director, and other school leadership as necessary.
-Provide regular updates on the status of clinical site and student experiences.
Attend meetings/call with COM leadership:
-Participate in monthly meetings or calls with the LIC Director and other clinical education leadership.
-Contribute insights and updates regarding clinical site operations and student experiences.
-Develop/Serve as Program Director, Thoracic Surgery training program.
Qualifications
MD/DO degree from an accredited medical school
Unrestricted Texas Medical License
Board Certification
Minimum 7 years’ experience in medical education
Familiarity with accreditation standards for medical education (e.g, LCME, ACGME)
Strong analytical skills and ability to use data to inform decision making.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated leadership abilities and abilities to work effectively in a team environment.
Applicants must have a PhD and/or MD/DO, dependent on the position, from an accredited institution. Official transcripts are required for faculty appointment and will be requested upon selection of the final candidate(s). Physician applicants must possess an unrestricted Texas Medical License and board certification in their specialty. While exceptions may be considered, approval must be obtained from the Vice Dean of Education and/or the Dean of the College of Medicine and the Office of the Provost. All positions within the University of Houston System are security sensitive and will require a criminal history check. Physician applicants are required to provide documentation of current licensure and board certification as part of their application materials.
