Description:
The Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine at the University of Houston invites applications for a non-tenure track Clinical Associate Professor/Clinical Professor - Assistant Dean for Clinical Skills.
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Medical Education, the Assistant Dean for Clinical Skills plays a pivotal role in ensuring the excellence of our graduates’ clinical skills through leadership and integration of clinical skills teaching, experience, and assessment for medical students throughout the four-year curriculum. This position is instrumental in developing exceptionally skilled and compassionate physicians.

Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Oversight:
• Provide strategic leadership and vision for Clinical Skills education, the Clinical Skills Center, simulation activities, and the standardized patient program.
• Collaborate with faculty, course and clerkship directors, administrators, and stakeholders to ensure alignment of clinical skills education with institutional goals and accreditation standards.
• Supervise and support staff, faculty, and other instructors involved in clinical skills education, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.
Curriculum Integration:
• Work closely with faculty, course directors, curriculum committees, and medical education leadership to integrate clinical skills education seamlessly throughout the medical school curriculum.
• Develop and implement strategies to ensure the progressive development and mastery of clinical skills across all phases of medical education.
• Collaborate with basic science and clinical faculty to enhance the integration of clinical skills with foundational knowledge, clinical reasoning, and health systems science.
Teaching and Assessment:
• Oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of teaching methods and assessment tools for clinical skills education.
• Develop and deliver faculty development programs to enhance teaching effectiveness and assessment reliability.
• Ensure the use of best practices in assessment, including direct observation, simulation, standardized patients, and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).
Clinical Skills Center and Simulation:
• Direct the operation and resources of the Clinical Skills Center and simulation facilities, ensuring optimal functionality and accessibility for students and faculty.
• Collaborate with center’s simulation specialists and technical staff to develop and implement immersive and realistic simulated clinical encounters and learning scenarios.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of standardized patient and other simulation-based learning experiences and implement plans for quality improvement.
Standardized Patient Program:
• Oversee the recruitment, training, and evaluation of standardized patients to ensure the quality and consistency of interactions with medical students.
• Develop and maintain a large pool of standardized patients to represent a wide range of clinical scenarios and demographics.
• Oversee the scheduling and logistics of standardized patient encounters within the curriculum.
Qualifications:
• Medical degree (MD or DO) with board certification in a clinical specialty
• Significant experience in medical education, simulation, and clinical skills learning and assessment, preferably in a leadership role related to clinical skills education.
• Evidence of scholarship in medical education including assessment, evaluation, design, and/or curricular innovation.
• Strong understanding of educational theory, instructional design principles, and assessment methods.
• Demonstrated leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Experience in curriculum development, program evaluation, and accreditation processes.
• Familiarity with simulation-based education and standardized patient programs.
• Eligibility for appointment at the academic rank of Associate Professor or higher.
FTE: 0.7 to 0.8
Rank and Salary: Commensurate with academic achievements and experience
