Description:

The Benefits and Compensation Specialist is responsible for providing support in certain components in the administration and analysis of employee benefits and compensation programs. This role also involves ensuring fair and competitive compensation structures, conducting salary surveys, and ensuring compliance with relevant labor laws. The position supports the human resources department in attracting, retaining, and motivating employees through effective benefits and compensation strategies.

Duties

  • Administers employee insurance programs including but not limited to health, dental, vision, life insurance, and retirement plans
  • Administers the university's leave programs, including, but not limited to, FMLA and Sick Leave Pool including worker’s compensation, and workplace accommodations
  • Organizes and promotes wellness initiatives to enhance employee engagement and awareness
  • Provides guidance on compensation-related inquiries, including salary and benefits
  • Assesses and conducts job evaluations to determine FLSA classification and market pay; works with hiring managers to provide appropriate guidance regarding pay decisions, policies, and job evaluation
  • Produces regular and ad hoc reports using the HRIS as requested
  • Serves as primary administrator for job description management system and works with hiring managers to create and/or update job descriptions, suggesting edits based on best practices
  • Reviews and approvals of all staff job offers and job requisitions
  • Assists in developing compensation strategies that align with organizational goals and promote employee retention and satisfaction
  • Maintains accurate records of employee benefit elections, compensation data, and other related information
  • Assists in analyzing compensation data to identify trends and improvement opportunities
  • Assists in the development and implementation of presentations and communications to increase employee education and awareness related to benefits and compensation

Qualifications

Required Education: 

  • Bachelor's degree (Relevant experience may be substituted for education)

Required Experience: 

  • Minimum of two (2) years of related job experience in compensation, benefits, or human resources management

License/Certification:

  • None required

Preferred Qualifications                                                                                                                                 

  • SHRM-CP or PHR certification is preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, or related field
  • Experience with PeopleSoft or other HRIS
  • Experience with Pay Factors or other compensation management system

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge: 

  • Knowledge of trends, developments, and best practices and legal regulations in compensation and benefits administration
  • Proficiency in HR software and systems

Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel

Abilities: 

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize in a fast-paced environment 
  • Ability to work with confidential information
  • Ability to provide high level of customer service with willingness to provide assistance, and effective & empathetic communication style when managing in/outbound communications
  • High attention to detail and data accuracy

Work Location and Physical Demands

Primary Work Location: 

  • Works in an office environment

Physical Demands: 

  • Work is performed in a typical interior work environment, which does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elements 
  • Individual has discretion in relation to walking, standing, etc., and has minimal exposure to physical risks
