Department: Physics Salary: Commensurate with experience

Description:

The Department of Physics at the University of Houston invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor in the area of theoretical quantum physics and artificial intelligence, to begin in Fall 2025. This position is part of the university-wide Presidential Frontier Faculty (PFF) initiative and seeks candidates whose research advances the theoretical foundations of quantum science and many-body systems through artificial intelligence and machine learning.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose work bridges quantum information theory, quantum algorithms, entanglement structure, or the application of AI/ML to quantum many-body physics, electronic structure theory, or complex emergent phenomena. Applicants should have a strong track record of research and demonstrate the potential to develop a vigorous, externally funded research program. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to our growing efforts in quantum materials, condensed matter theory, and computational physics, while fostering collaborations across departments, including engineering, chemistry, computer science, and mathematics.

The new faculty member will teach both undergraduate and graduate courses and mentor students and postdoctoral researchers in a robust academic environment. A Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field is required. Postdoctoral experience in theoretical quantum science, quantum information, or AI-enhanced physics is strongly preferred. Competitive candidates will demonstrate strong communication skills and show promise in securing federal funding (e.g., NSF, DOE) and contributing to multi-investigator, interdisciplinary initiatives.

This position aligns with national and state-level priorities in Quantum Information Science and AI for Science. It is supported by a vibrant research environment at the University of Houston, a Carnegie Tier One public research institution. The new hire will have access to a strong network of collaborators across campus and be well positioned to participate in center-level research proposals and initiatives.

The University of Houston is responsive to the needs of dual career couples.

Application Instructions: Applicants should submit a cover letter, a teaching statement, a statement of research interests and plans (including strategies for involving students and seeking external support), a full curriculum vitae with a list of publications, and contact information for at least three professional references.

All materials must be submitted online at: Prospective Faculty | Office of the Provost | University of Houston

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. For full consideration, applications should be received by December 1, 2025. Inquiries may be directed to Prof. Eric Bittner at bittner@uh.edu.

Official transcripts are required for a faculty appointment and will be requested upon selection of the final candidate.

All positions at the University of Houston-System are security sensitive and will require a criminal history check. Individuals conducting research in critical infrastructure areas (i.e., communication infrastructure systems, cybersecurity systems, electric grid, hazardous waste treatment systems, and/or water treatment facilities) are subject to regular review to ensure the security and integrity of the research is maintained.

The University of Houston System and its universities are Equal Opportunity Institutions. Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
