ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN GEOLOGY (2 POSITIONS)

The Department of Natural Sciences at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) is seeking to fill two tenure track Assistant Professor positions in Geology, starting Fall 2025. Preference will be given to those applicants specializing in sedimentology & stratigraphy and structural geology. Additional areas of expertise that would be useful include hydrogeology, GIS/remote sensing, geophysics, and petroleum geology. Candidates are expected to 1) teach upper-level courses in geology, 2) mentor undergraduate research students, 3) seek external funding, and 4) be active in student recruitment. Successful candidates must have a Ph.D. in geology at the time of appointment.

About UHD:

UHD is a teaching university with tenure-track faculty that teaches 21 contact hours over two long semesters. Teaching responsibilities for this position include undergraduate geology courses based on expertise and the needs of the department. In addition to providing student-centered pedagogy in all courses, this position requires the establishment of a successful research program that actively engages undergraduate students. The faculty member is expected to pursue funding to support their research and to engage in service activities that support the mission of the department and UHD.

Required qualifications:

  • Candidates must have received a Ph.D. in Geology or related discipline at the time of appointment.

Preferred skills, knowledge, and experience:

  • Research expertise in: 1) sedimentology and stratigraphy, and 2) structural geology
  • Demonstrated potential in teaching undergraduate courses in a range of instructional modalities
  • Demonstrated potential in teaching a field geology course that emphasizes geologic mapping
  • Potential for developing an active research program/plan involving undergraduate students
  • Potential for seeking/obtaining external funding

4. A statement of research including proposed research projects with a plan to engage undergraduate students and the infrastructure and equipment needs for the project(s)
5. A copy of all unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts
