Department: Vision Sciences
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Description:
The University of Houston (UH) seeks an outstanding biomedical researcher to join other vision scientists on the faculty in the Department of Vision Sciences in its College of Optometry (http://www.opt.uh.edu/). A tenured/tenure-track position is open for a promising assistant, associate, or full professor. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct a nationally recognized, independent, externally funded research program in vision science or relevant applied biomedical sciences.
We are seeking candidates with expertise in visual psychophysics directed towards the investigation of normal or abnormal sensory or perceptual aspects of monocular or binocular visual processing. The ideal candidate for this position would carry out psychophysical, physiological, and/or imaging studies on the visual capabilities of humans or relevant animal models. The applicant would teach fundamental vision science topics that complement their research area and could include characteristics and mechanisms of visual perception of color, form, motion, depth and/or spatiotemporal patterns, in the College's optometry program and graduate program in physiological optics.
The successful applicant will join a group of vision researchers studying normal and abnormal visual processes, using a variety of approaches ranging from molecular and cellular, to behavioral and optical. The research program is supported by a P30 core grant from the National Eye Institute (NEI), which provides technical support for instrumentation and optical design, programming and application development, biostatistics, histology, and biomedical imaging capabilities. A T35 training grant also supports research training for professional students. The patient base provides opportunities for patient-based or translational investigations. Existing biomedical research strengths within the College, University, and the neighboring Texas Medical Center provide a unique environment for collaboration.
To apply, please attach (1) Cover letter, (2) Curriculum Vitae, (3) two-page description of research experience, current interests and projects and long-term goals, (4) one to two page statement of teaching philosophy, and (5) the names and contact information for three references.
Please contact, Dr. Vallabh Das, Dept. Chair of Vision Sciences at vdas@Central.UH.EDU or Dr. Lisa Ostrin, Search Committee Chair at lostrin@Central.UH.EDU, should you have any follow-up questions.
Salary and rank will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience, and the startup package will be competitive.
