The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Houston Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine invites applications for a non-tenure-track faculty position at any rank (Clinical Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) in the field of Physiology.
Reporting to the associate dean for medical education, the biomedical science education specialist will work with biomedical and clinical sciences faculty, staff, and students to foster and support integration of biomedical, clinical, and health systems sciences concepts required for success on NBME, USMLE, and other required examinations, provide direct teaching and support to medical students in the integration and application of concepts, and contribute to faculty, staff, and student development of skills leading to improved learning, mastery, and performance.
Key Responsibilities:
FTE: 0.80
Strategic planning for integration and application of core concepts
- In collaboration with faculty, assess student skills to identify gaps in knowledge and application of core concepts.
- Work with education leadership, course directors, and faculty to design, deliver, and evaluate approaches to promote student mastery and application of foundational biomedical sciences concepts.
Teaching, assessment, and evaluation
- Deliver weekly sessions to enhance identification, reinforcement, and application of key concepts, promoting consolidation of student understanding and their ability to apply knowledge to new scenarios.
- Design and administer individual student assessments to direct student learning activities and provide feedback to faculty and curriculum.
- Develop, deliver, and evaluate an approximately 4-week course directed at consolidating core concepts and enhancing performance on the USMLE Step 1 Exam.
Student learning and performance coaching
- Create individualized learning plans and provide individual student coaching for learners at high risk of failure on NBME, USMLE, and other summative exams.
- Create and implement strategies for training peer tutors, learning community professors, and other staff and faculty to enhance their abilities to effectively coach students for improved self-assessment, learning approaches, and performance.
Faculty development and service
- Lead and contribute to faculty development on effective learning, integration and mastery of core concepts o Establish and maintain collaborative and supportive relationships with colleagues and students.
- Contribute to relaying identified areas of need in the curriculum to the curriculum committee, office of medical education, and others.
Salary and rank commensurate with experience.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD, MD, DO, EdD or comparable terminal degree with at least 5 years of medical education and curriculum experience, including direct teaching coaching or remediation, and activities related to licensure examination preparation of medical students
- Commitment to innovative approaches to education and learning
- Ability to succinctly and effectively convey complex ideas through oral and written communication
- Ability to establish and maintain effective rapport with students of all abilities
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building partnerships across disciplines in pursuit of educational and national objectives
- Experience with cross-disciplinary teaching in an integrated medical curriculum
- Experience with curriculum development and evaluation
- Experience with related data analysis
- Evidence of scholarship in education, including medical education
- Direct experience with national exam development, delivery, and evaluation (e.g., as a question writer, exam developer, or other formal role(s))
